Request A Callback From An Investigator

How to Check Private Investigator License

If you're thinking about hiring a private investigator, you'll want someone who has been licensed by the Security Industry Authority. Whether or not a private investigator has been licensed says a lot about the status of their operation.

Although private investigators don't need licenses, having one is seen as a good thing because it means that they have the training needed to get the private investigator license and that they've also undergone a background check so nothing from their past is likely to come and haunt you. This means that you can trust them to handle your sensitive information with the required care. However, there's still the question of how you'll know whether or not an investigator is licensed.

How To Know If You're Dealing With A Licensed Private Investigator

Thanks to how licensing of private investigators is done, it's not too difficult to tell whether a private investigator has a license or not. A few ways you can find this out include:

  • Ask them for their official SIA license. The license has a holographic overlay that is difficult to fake.
  • Check with any professional associations that they claim to be a member of such as the Association of British Investigators (ABI)
  • Get in touch with the Security Industry Authority office and ask if they're licensed
  • If the detective is a member of the UK Private Investigators Network (UKPIN) you can also confirm with the organization.

SIA licenses are valid for three years. Ensure the private investigator you're working with isn't using a license that has expired.

Current licenses come with a QR code and barcode that can provide you with the relevant information including whether or not the license is still valid. Slightly older private investigator licenses have a chip.
