The Process Of Applying And Receiving An Sia License

Once you've undergone training and hold an IQ Level 3 Award for Professional Investigators, you'll be ready to start the application process for getting a private detective license. The process for applying for any SIA license follows the following structure:

  • You'll need to set up a personal account on the website of the Security Industry Authority. This will also mean filling in your basic information.
  • Once your account is set, you have to start the process of applying for the specific license you'd like to get. In this case, that's a private investigator license. Fill in the forms and send them with any requested attachments.
  • You'll be notified via your account and your email when you're ready to go through the next stage which involves going to the post office to have your identity verified and to make the necessary payments and submit the required documents. The Payment of £220 must be made before the next step starts.
  • The SIA will start the process of thoroughly analyzing your application to ascertain that you're qualified. This will also mean carrying out a background check.

Applicants whose applications are to be rejected will have 21 days to make an appeal before the decision is finalized. Applicants with approved applications will have to wait for a maximum of 14 days before receiving their private detective license cards.

The license you receive will expire in 3 years and will have to be renewed at the end of that period.
