How Do I Get a Private Investigator License?

Many private investigators are interested in becoming licensed. Although it's not compulsory here in the UK, it has various benefits such as giving you a more professional image. With this in mind, it's important to understand exactly what it takes to get a private investigator's license so you know what you're in for even before you start down the road to becoming a private investigator.

The Security Industry Authority

No discussion about private investigator licensing is complete without mention the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The SIA is the body charged with the responsibility of issuing licenses to individuals wishing to take up licensable roles within the security industry. These roles range from vehicle immobilization to close protection services. Private investigator licenses are also issued by the same body.

The Security Industry Authority can also turn down your application for a private investigator license if you don't meet one of their criteria.

Courses Required To Be A Licensed Private Investigator

Although there are other requirements to become a licensed private investigator, one of the most important is the course that you'll have to take. These courses will provide you with the skills you'll need to offer investigative services to your clients.

There are various courses that you can take and can even study. The course you take should lead to an IQ Level 3 Award for Professional Investigators or an equivalent. These courses cost several hundred pounds and you can study on a full-time or part-time basis depending on how much time you can dedicate to the program. You require a minimum of 39 guided learning hours to take the qualification examination.

Other Requirements For Sia Licensing

Apart from the training requirement, there are other requirements that you must fulfil to qualify for an SIA license. These are:

  • Be of legal working age
  • Have a right to work in the UK (citizenship is not a must)
  • Pass the fit and proper person tests
  • £220 for a 3-year license
