Training To Become A Private Detective

If you have no prior experience in law enforcement or the armed forces, it is recommended that you undergo private investigator training before you dive into the world of private investigation.

To become a proper private investigator takes more than a spy camera and counter surveillance equipment. You'll need to learn the skills needed and the legal aspects of the job. Additionally, being trained in a recognized institution is necessary if you're to receive an IQ Level 3 Award for Private Investigators. This award is necessary if you're to be licensed by the Security Industry Authority or SIA.


Becoming A Licensed Private Investigator

Receiving a private investigator license from the Security Industry Authority is not yet compulsory for private investigators. However, this license is an important part of the professional investigators' toolkit. It shows the client that you have undergone the necessary training and operate within professional guidelines.

To get a license from the Security Industry governing body, you'll need to have the following:

  • An IQ Level 3 Certificate
  • Right to work in the UK
  • Proof that you're of sound mind

Only individuals over the age of 18 can be licensed by this organization.

Applications for an investigator's license by persons with a criminal record will be considered on a case by case basis.
