Boys and dogs - Sat, 04 Feb 2012 05:59:54 PST

Would you like a piece? Now, sit nicely for me!

Both these postcards came from a collection given to me by a Dutch friend which, I believe, were all cards sent to her brother. I tried Google translate, which I normally find reasonably accurate, for both these cards but it made little sense. I guessed the first (and may well be very wrong) but the second involved far too much guesswork so I decided not to attempt it..

Both were sent in May 1938, to the same child and from the same people. I can't imagine why they sent two cards unless it was because they couldn't choose between them, but they were sent two weeks apart.

A post for Sepia Saturday. A click on the button will take you to the blog.

Almost enough books - Fri, 03 Feb 2012 07:04:18 PST

A little girl lost in a library or maybe even a bookshop. They don't have places like this any more, where you can lose yourself among the shelves. Years ago I visitedFoylesbookshop in London which had higgledy piggledy rooms of higgledy piggledy shelves and it was a joy. I believe they have modernised - I do hope not too much but I fear the worst.

The card was sent from Taiwan but there is no indication of the artist or any other information.

This is a post for Postcard Friendship Friday hosted on Beth Niquette's blog The Best Hearts are Crunchy. Just click on the button to visit and join in.

Wenceslas Square - Thu, 02 Feb 2012 15:41:14 PST

Wenceslas Square in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, is not so much a square as a grand avenue. It is named after Saint Wenceslas who was awarded the title of King of Bohemia after he died, and has since had a Christmas carol written about him:
Good King Wenceslaslooked out
On the Feast of Stephen
When the snow lay round about
Deep and crisp and even
.
There is a statue of him on a horse right at the far end as you view this card, and behind that statue is the National Museum. It is a wonderful building. I would almost say the building is more interesting than the exhibits, but apparently it is now closed for several years for refurbishment.

The Square is part of the historic centre of Prague, a World Heritage Site. I was lucky enough to stay there for about a week a few years ago.
