Life without light - 2012-02-07 08:13:51

In a bid to highlight just how much light we use in our lives photographer Peter DiCampo is opening an exhibition entitled 'Life without lights'. He visited Northern Ghana, where up to 1.4 billion people live without electricity, to see how hard it is to live without something we take for granted everyday.

The exhibition sees visitors being handed a solar lamp on their way in and then they enter the darkened gallery to experience life without light. The exhibition will run from the 6th - 12th of February atThe Strand Gallery, London.

For some inspiring projects aimed at lighting up the developing world check out these solarWakaWaka lampsandlights made from little more than a plastic bottle.

The plastic eating mushroom - 2012-02-06 08:20:26

Polyurethane is a plastic that cannot be recycled. And unfortunately it is being used to make a LOT of stuff. And more often than not it is cheap, throw away stuff too.

But now it seems there is something that can break down this seemingly indestructible product. Fungus. An Amazonian fungus to be exact. Pestalotiopsis microspor, to give it its proper name, was found in Ecuador by a group of Yale student researchers and can survive exclusively on polyurethane. Not only that but it can do this in anaerobic conditions. This doesn't mean wearing a leotard, rather it is an oxygen-less environment like that found at the bottom of landfills (where there isn't mushroom! Geddit?). This means that we might soon be able to find a way to actually get rid of this tricky plastic for good, rather than just burying it and trying to forget all about it.
